The vice president of the Human Rights Commission of the capital congress, Rebeca Peralta, has called on the Undersecretary of the Penitentiary System for the assignment of at least 50 security personnel in the Mexico City Penitentiary. Peralta explained that this request is due to the need to occupy three levels of a building that was built after the 2017 earthquake and is currently unoccupied.
In her statements, the legislator mentioned that during the tours conducted, they noticed that part of the new building in the Penitentiary is not being used due to the lack of guards. Therefore, they have officially sent the request to the Undersecretary to assign these security personnel as soon as possible.
Rebeca Peralta emphasized that this penitentiary is the oldest in Mexico City, and to repair the damage suffered in the dormitories during the 2017 earthquake, the former head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, ordered the construction of a new building. She pointed out that the Penitentiary houses more than 3,600 people deprived of their liberty, including many elderly people and those with chronic degenerative diseases, making it essential for them to have a dignified space to serve their sentences.
"The space is available; there are three levels that can be occupied in this new building, but it is crucial to have security personnel. For this reason, we hope that the Undersecretary will address this request promptly," Rebeca Peralta emphasized.
